Parent Coaching
At Contemporary CBT, we offer parent coaching for parents and caregivers who want practical, compassionate support navigating their child or teen’s emotional, behavioral, or anxiety-related challenges. Parent coaching helps caregivers better understand what may be driving difficult patterns and learn strategies to respond more effectively at home.
Parent coaching can be helpful when families are dealing with anxiety, emotional outbursts, avoidance, perfectionism, school stress, parent-child conflict, reassurance seeking, challenging behaviors, or difficulty setting limits. We offer parent coaching in person at our Chicago (Lakeview) and Skokie offices, as well as through secure virtual sessions for clients located in Illinois, Florida, Michigan, South Carolina, and Wisconsin.
What Is Parent Coaching?
Parent coaching is a collaborative, skills-based service that helps parents understand their child’s behavior and respond in ways that support emotional growth, confidence, and healthier family patterns.
Many parents come to coaching feeling stuck. They may feel like they are constantly reassuring, negotiating, reminding, accommodating, arguing, or walking on eggshells. Others may feel unsure whether to be more supportive, more firm, or both.
In parent coaching, we help parents better understand the patterns happening at home and develop practical strategies that fit their child’s needs, temperament, and developmental stage. The goal is not to blame parents or create a “perfect” parenting plan. The goal is to help parents feel more confident, consistent, and effective.

How Parent Coaching Works
Parent coaching focuses on helping caregivers understand the cycle they may be caught in with their child or teen. Often, parents are doing their best to reduce distress in the moment, but some responses may unintentionally keep anxiety, avoidance, or conflict going over time.
For example, a parent may reassure a child repeatedly because the child is anxious. This may help temporarily, but the child may become more dependent on reassurance the next time anxiety shows up. Or a parent may allow avoidance because they do not want their child to feel overwhelmed, but avoidance can make the feared situation feel even harder later.
In parent coaching, your therapist may help you:
Understand what is driving your child’s behavior
Identify family patterns that may be reinforcing anxiety or conflict
Respond to big emotions with warmth and structure
Reduce reassurance, accommodation, or avoidance cycles
Set limits clearly and consistently
Support brave behavior and skill-building
Strengthen communication with your child or teen
Manage your own stress and emotional reactions as a parent
Create realistic plans for difficult moments
Support therapy goals at home
Parent coaching is practical and personalized. We work with you to develop strategies that are realistic for your family.
